Bellarmine University’s softball team lost both games of a series-opening doubleheader against Austin Peay on April 3, falling 8-0 and 15-0 at Cathi Maynard Park in Clarksville, Tennessee.
The results mark a challenging start to the series for Bellarmine, as both games ended after five innings due to the mercy rule. The Knights and Governors were tied without scoring through three and a half innings in the first game before Austin Peay broke through with eight runs in the fourth inning. Two home runs contributed to their surge, and they closed out the game by shutting down Bellarmine in the fifth.
Despite the losses, Bellarmine had some defensive highlights early on. Senior Jacklyn Zuege made a diving play for a line drive double play in the second inning. In the third, senior Madison Davis chased down a foul ball for another diving catch and threw out a runner attempting to advance.
In game two, Austin Peay quickly took control by scoring seven runs on seven hits—including two home runs—in just the first inning. The Governors continued their offense with four more runs each in both the second and third innings, resulting in another five-inning win.
The series is set to conclude with one more game between Bellarmine and Austin Peay scheduled for Saturday, April 4 at 1 p.m. Eastern Time.
