The University of Louisville track and field teams began their participation in the 66th annual Mt. SAC Relays on April 15, as two athletes competed in multi-event competitions.
The event marks the start of a five-meet stretch for the Cardinals, highlighting early season efforts by both men’s and women’s teams. The Mt. SAC Relays are a significant fixture in collegiate track and field, drawing top competitors from across the country.
KJ Byrd returned to compete in the men’s decathlon for the first time this season, finishing day one in fifth place with a total of 4,124 points. Byrd’s performance included a 100-meter dash time of 10.94 seconds, a long jump mark of 7.24 meters (23-9), an outdoor personal record of 13.12 meters (43-0.5) in shot put, a high jump clearance at 2.08 meters (6-9.75), and a 400-meter run completed in 49.75 seconds.
Lucy Fellows represented Louisville in the women’s heptathlon, ending her first day ranked twelfth with a score of 3,249 points after four events: she recorded times of 14.44 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles and 24.83 seconds in the 200 meters; she also achieved marks of 1.62 meters (5-3.75) in high jump and threw for 12.15 meters (39-10.5) in shot put.
Competition will continue tomorrow afternoon at Hilmer Lodge Stadium with both athletes set to resume their respective events—Fellows continuing her heptathlon at approximately 1:00 p.m., followed by Byrd’s decathlon events beginning around 2:30 p.m., Eastern Time.
Louisville will also see action tomorrow at two other meets: the Bryan Clay Invitational starting with women’s distance races at Azusa Pacific University and pole vault competitions kicking off proceedings at Long Beach’s Pacific Coast Invitational.
