WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 25, 2023) – On May 25, Congressman Morgan McGarvey (KY-03) joined Congressional Democrats on the House Floor to demand Congressional Republicans do their job and pay America’s bills. Below are Congressman McGarvey’s remarks:

I know I’m new here, but I came here to work — to work across the aisle and to actually get things done. But here we are on the eve of our country’s default and my Republican colleagues aren’t even here to work with.

This isn’t difficult. The United States government contracted for and received goods and services. Now, it must pay for them. We must pay our bills.

Default would be catastrophic for the people in Louisville, Kentucky. New car loans would go up by $800, mortgages for new homes would increase by $38,000, 317,000 families, seniors and veterans risk losing their benefits. Not to mention the long term damage to our currency and reputation around the world.

The alternative — proposed by extreme Republicans — is that we slash benefits to our veterans and to needy kids instead of closing tax loopholes for billionaires and mega-corporations. This is fiscally irresponsible and it’s morally wrong. Do better, sign the discharge petition, and get this done to save our economy.

Congressman McGarvey’s full floor speech can be viewed here.

The Republican-manufactured crisis would be catastrophic for Kentucky’s Third Congressional District. It would:

  • Kill 7,300 jobs in Louisville and Jefferson County
  • Raise the cost of new car loan by $800
  • Jeopardize social security payments for 100,000 families
  • Increase lifetime mortgage costs by $38,000
  • Threaten the retirement savings of 97,000 people near retirement
  • Put health benefits at risk for 317,000 seniors, families, and veterans

Congressman McGarvey has signed onto legislation that allows a bipartisan solution to save our economy and prevent defaulting on our debt. If five House Republicans sign the same legislation, the crisis can be ended immediately.
