The University of Louisville baseball team lost 8-5 to California on April 18 in Berkeley, California. The Cardinals, who were playing their first game in the state since 2011, started strong but could not hold off a late surge by the Bears.
The game began with Louisville taking an early lead. Zion Rose singled with one out in the first inning and Bayram Hot followed with a home run, putting the Cardinals ahead 2-0 after just four batters. Starting pitcher Wyatt Danilowicz kept Cal scoreless through three innings while his teammates added two more runs in the fourth. Tague Davis hit his first of two home runs to open that inning, becoming the fastest Louisville player to reach 20 homers since at least 2000. Kade Elam extended the lead to 4-0 with a sacrifice fly.
Cal responded in the fifth inning by scoring three runs on five hits. Davis answered for Louisville with another home run—his second of the night and twenty-first of the season—but Cal took its first lead in the sixth on a three-run homer. The Bears added two more runs with another home run in the eighth inning.
Danilowicz finished his outing allowing five runs over five-plus innings and recorded eight strikeouts before leaving without a decision. Eight out of nine starters for Louisville registered hits during the game, led by Davis’s two-homer performance.
Louisville and Cal are scheduled to continue their weekend series on Saturday evening at 5 p.m. Eastern Time.
