The University of Louisville men’s golf team is tied for the lead after the opening round of the sixth annual Calusa Cup, played on Apr. 5 at Calusa Pines Golf Club in Naples, Florida.
The Cardinals finished with a team score of 5-under-par 288, sharing the top spot with Florida and Eastern Michigan as they head into Monday’s second round. The University of South Florida is in fourth place at 4-under-par, while host Iowa stands fifth at 1-over-par.
Louisville’s performance was bolstered by Andrew Tan and Warren Thomis, who both posted rounds of 2-under-par 70 to tie for seventh place individually. Tan made three birdies and an eagle on hole No. 13 during his round. Thomis led the team with six birdies. Both players are just two shots behind four co-leaders after one day of play.
Easton Johnson also contributed a strong showing for Louisville, finishing with a score of 1-under-par 71 to sit in twelfth place overall. Brady Smith and Cooper Claycomb each recorded even-par rounds of 72, tying them for fourteenth place heading into the next day.
As competition continues into Monday’s second round, Louisville will look to maintain its position atop the leaderboard.
