The University of Louisville softball team achieved its 40th win of the season after defeating Syracuse 5-1 on Apr. 25 at Ulmer Stadium. The No. 25-ranked Cardinals improved their record to 40-10 overall and 15-5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, marking their first time reaching the milestone since 2013.
This result is significant for Louisville as it highlights a return to strong form not seen in over a decade. The team’s performance demonstrates consistency and strength during this year’s campaign.
Pitcher Madi Reeves played a key role by throwing her second complete game of the season, recording a season-high six strikeouts while allowing six hits and only one unearned run. Madison Pickens and Ava Venturelli led the offense with two runs batted in each, while Pickens, Easton Lotus, Bri Despines, and Addy O’Dell each contributed stolen bases.
Louisville started quickly as Chelsea Mack and Lotus delivered back-to-back singles in the first inning before Lookadoo’s sacrifice fly brought home Mack for the opening run. Pickens followed up with an RBI single that gave Louisville an early two-run lead. The game remained close until Syracuse scored its only run in the sixth inning.
In response, Despines was hit by a pitch to start Louisville’s half of the sixth before scoring on another single from Pickens. Venturelli then drove in two more runs with a single to centerfield, sealing the victory for Louisville.
The series between Louisville and Syracuse will conclude tomorrow at noon at Ulmer Stadium, where Senior Day festivities are planned before first pitch.
