U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has announced that the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) will provide $706,113 in federal funding to Kentucky through the State Opioid Response Grant Program.
The funds are designated for expanding the Recovery Housing Program, a transitional housing pilot initiative created by Senator McConnell’s Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery through Effective Employment and Reentry (CAREER) Act in 2018. This program is intended to help states increase access to safe transitional housing for individuals recovering from addiction as they rehabilitate and return to the workforce. The new allocation will focus on developing and expanding support specifically for young adults in recovery and reentering employment.
Senator McConnell recently introduced the CAREER Act of 2025, which aims to enhance workforce reentry and recovery housing programs originally established under the 2018 law. Since its inception, nearly $12.5 million has been directed to Kentucky through this legislation, benefiting hundreds of residents recovering from substance use disorder.
“Kentucky’s workforce continues to feel the effects of the opioid epidemic that plagues our nation. I’m proud to have championed the CAREER Act in the Senate which helps combat this crisis by providing funding for resources helping those in recovery get back into the workforce,” said Senator McConnell. “This announcement is yet another step in the right direction giving our communities much needed assistance in transitional housing and continuing to help our youth get their lives back on track.”
The federal funding announced today will be allocated by Kentucky state authorities to various programs across the state focused on preventing, reducing, and treating opioid abuse.
