U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has issued a statement on the death of former Kentucky Governor Martha Layne Collins. In his remarks, McConnell recognized Collins as a trailblazer in Kentucky politics and highlighted her contributions to the state.
“As Kentucky’s first female governor, Martha Layne Collins was known for breaking barriers. Governor Collins was a tireless advocate for all levels of education in Kentucky, and that passion carried her throughout her life. She also promoted growth in the Commonwealth by bringing the Toyota Plant to Georgetown stimulating the regional economy. It is with deep sadness that Elaine and I learned about Governor Collins’ passing, and we send our sincere condolences to her husband, Bill, and her two children,” McConnell stated.
Collins served as governor from 1983 to 1987 and was instrumental in advancing educational initiatives across Kentucky. She also played a significant role in economic development efforts, including facilitating the establishment of Toyota’s manufacturing plant in Georgetown.
