U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Defense Subcommittee, released a statement addressing U.S. policy on Ukraine and urging stronger action from the Trump Administration.
McConnell expressed support for President Trump’s recognition that Ukraine can resist Russian aggression. He criticized previous efforts under President Biden, stating, “For years, President Biden’s dithering and hesitant efforts to help Ukraine defend itself only prolonged this conflict.” McConnell also noted that some senior members of the current administration have recommended a similar approach to the ongoing war.
He emphasized that inaction would not deter Russia’s President Vladimir Putin: “Passivity in the face of aggression will not stop Putin. Self-imposed constraints will only delay the peace the President rightly seeks.”
McConnell called on the administration to align its actions with public opinion and congressional support for military aid to Ukraine. “The President has identified Russia as the aggressor, and clear majorities of Americans, including Republicans, support continued military assistance to Ukraine; his Administration should act accordingly,” he said.
He warned against Department of Defense officials who might oppose or limit security assistance: “If senior Department of Defense officials continue to blame NATO allies for provoking Russia, freeze or limit security assistance to Ukraine, or oppose further investments in security cooperation with Ukraine and vulnerable NATO allies, in defiance of the support expressed overwhelmingly by House Republicans last week, they are undermining President Trump’s efforts to end the war.”
McConnell concluded by urging decisive action: “The world is watching to see if President Trump’s Administration translates his rhetoric into action.”
