Jimmy Nugent hit a walk-off home run as the University of Louisville baseball team defeated Clemson 7-5 in 10 innings on Sunday at Jim Patterson Stadium. The win completed a sweep of Clemson and extended Louisville’s winning streak to five games.
The game was tied in the bottom of the tenth inning when Nugent hit the first pitch he saw just inside the left field foul pole, securing victory for Louisville (26-18, 10-11 Atlantic Coast Conference). The Cardinals’ performance also featured a record-setting moment from Tague Davis, who hit his 26th home run of the season in the eighth inning. This broke Louisville’s single-season home run record previously held by Randy Delph (1974) and Chris Dominguez (2009).
Lucas Moore reached a milestone with his 100th career stolen base in the ninth inning, becoming only the second player in program history and eighth in Atlantic Coast Conference history to achieve this mark. Earlier in the game, Nugent had started scoring for Louisville with a solo home run in the second inning.
Clemson (26-19, 6-15) managed to tie several times throughout the game but fell short after allowing runs from Zion Rose and Ben Slanker, including Slanker’s two-run homer in the fourth. In pitching performances, Eli Hoyt earned his first win at Louisville by delivering a scoreless tenth inning. Casen Murphy made his first start of the season without allowing any runs over two innings while Colton Hartman gave up one run over three relief innings.
Nugent finished with three hits including two home runs—a multi-homer game for him—plus a double and three runs batted in. The Cardinals will conclude their five-game homestand against Indiana on Tuesday night at Jim Patterson Stadium.
