Women's soccer edged 2-1 by Wright State in season opener
The Bellarmine University women's soccer team fell 2-1 to Wright State in its season opener Thursday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
The contest marked the head-coaching debut of Paul Babba for Bellarmine (0-1). The Knights took a 1-0 lead early in the match, but Wright State (1-0) scored two unanswered goals to capture the victory.
Bellarmine scored its first goal of the season less than 11 minutes into the game. From near the left sideline, junior forward Sophie Bish launched a free kick toward the far post. Redshirt freshman midfielder Alexa Orozco slotted a shot past the goalkeeper for her first collegiate goal.
Wright State knotted it up at 1 in the 40th minute. Off a corner kick, Kaylin Helinski and Amber Branum managed to find Olga Massomno near the front of the goal, and she put away the equalizer.
The game-winner for the Raiders came in the 80th minute. Michelle Rings fired a rocket on a free kick from roughly 40 yards that landed under the crossbar and propelled Wright State ahead 2-1.
Bellarmine wasn't able to level the contest. The Knights had some unfortunate luck in the second half when senior midfielder Brielle Heuglin ripped a shot from the left wing that caromed off the crossbar.
The offense was nearly even. Wright State had a 10-9 edge in shots, including 4-3 on goal.
Bellarmine will host Southern Illinois at 3 p.m. (ET) Sunday.
