Men’s Basketball demotes Colonels

The Spalding men's basketball team took home the first win of the 2022-23 season with a 57-49 decision over Centre College.

The Golden Eagles are 1-5 overall, while the Colonels fall to 2-3 in the early season.

TURNING POINT
Spalding jumped out to an early six-point lead in the first half at the 14:27 mark and held onto it until 9:58 when Centre tied the contest. The game continued to go back and forth for what felt like the rest of the half.

The teams traded made baskets from deep with the final five field goals of the opening frame coming from behind the arch. Caden Bradford and Charlie Storm made two of those 3-pointers for SU. A late Colonel deep make sent the visitors to the half with a 25-22 lead.

A Jonathan Henson jumper cut the lead to one once play resumed, but Centre went on a 6-0 run to hold on to their advantage. The CC lead held until a basket in the paint for Jacoby Johnson turned the tide the way of the Golden Eagles.

Moments later, with Spalding down one point with 13:07 to go, the Golden Eagles caught fire. A 14-0 run for the home team stretched from the 12:09 mark to 2:55 left in the contest and built a commanding lead. The Colonels attempted to make things interesting and pulled within five, but Spalding held on for the 57-49 win.

GOLDEN EAGLE NOTES

Jacoby Johnson led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 11 points.

Anthony Dillard nearly had a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.

Maxton Campbell had a team-high 12 boards for Spalding. It ties his mark from the Belhaven game of the most rebounds by an SU player this season and is a career-high.

Campbell's three blocked shots were the best by a Golden Eagle all season and a career-best.

Spalding showed a balanced attack with all but two players who entered the game for SU putting points on the board.

The home team bench outscored the visitors by a margin of 26-11.
