In a series of tweets, McGarvey expresses concerns over tariffs and their impact on American industries.

On February 2, 2025, McGarvey highlighted the negative effects of tariffs on American whisky exports, noting a significant decline during Trump's first trade war. He stated, "American whisky exports dropped 20% during Donald Trump's first trade war." He further mentioned Canada's retaliatory measures and urged for immediate action to halt what he described as harmful tariffs imposed by Trump.

On February 3, 2025, McGarvey expanded on the potential consequences of these tariffs in another tweet. He emphasized the adverse effects on costs and specifically targeted the bourbon industry. McGarvey remarked that "Trump's tariffs are going to raise costs for everyone and devastate our bourbon industry." Representing a state with a $9 billion bourbon industry, he pledged to fight against these trade measures for the sake of Kentuckians and working families nationwide.

Later that day, McGarvey criticized Trump’s approach to presidential power in a separate tweet. He accused Trump of undermining constitutional principles by stating that "Donald Trump isn't 'pushing the limit of presidential power' — he's ripping up the Constitution in front of our eyes."
