Ryan and Eckman win weight classes, wrestling totals 33 wins at NUWAY College Open

Bellarmine wrestling stayed close to home on Friday and crowned a pair of champions at the NUWAY College Men's Open inside the Louisville Expo Center.

Bellarmine's Damion Ryan (125), and Tracye Eckman (133) won their respective weight classes, while the Knights totaled 33 victories as a team.  BU's team win percentage of 73 percent ranked fifth out of 41 squads.

"It was a busy day with the duals and the Mat Mayhem, but absolutely awesome having it here in Louisville," Knights Head Coach Ned Shuck said.  "I'm continuing to see growth in our guys' wrestling skills and consistency. It paid off today for some of our finalist and champs wrestling attached and unattached in the Open."

Ryan rolled to a 4-0 record defeating Gannon's Joe Gabler (MD, 16-3), Indiana Tech's Brendon Mark (Dec, 6-5), Cumberland's Busutil (Dec, 11-6), and Wisconsin-Whitewater's Jalen Dunson (SV-1, 6-4).  Eckman battled to a 5-0 record with wins over Augsburg's Carson Murray (Fall, 6:43), Luther's Yousuf Zigan (TF, 20-4), Life's Kaden Ramos (SV-1, 7-5), Indiana's Blaine Frazier (MFF), and Andrew Voiles - unattached (Dec, 5-2).

Two other Knights wrestlers who placed in their brackets were Alex Rivera (165) and Bryant Wilkinson (197).  Rivera posted a 4-1 record including a 23-7 tech fall win over William Krueger (Wisconsin-Eau Claire) and pin of Benjamin Phillips (Indiana).  Wilkinson went 3-1 on the mat, pinning Cruz Henton (Castleton) and Jake Kaminski (Wisconsin-Whitewater).

More Bellarmine wrestlers who earned victories include Shay Korhorn (133) with a 1-2 record, Chase Hall (141) with a 2-2 mark, Logan Hoskins (149) with a 3-2 record and three pins, Luke LeClerc (165) who went 2-2, and Noah Rowlett (174) with a 1-2 record.

"There's plenty to keep building on. Our focus tomorrow, as we pursue the dual meet championship, is to maximize our output," Shuck added. "Based on today's attitude, effort, and fight, I am excited to see what this team will do."

Bellarmine's competition in the NWCA National Duals began Friday and will conclude on Saturday at the Louisville Expo Center.
