Bellarmine increases award for high school students in Kentucky governor programs

Bellarmine University is greatly increasing its award for students who participate in the Kentucky Governor’s Scholars Program, Governor’s School for the Arts and the Governor’s School for Entrepreneurs to $30 thousand a year.

The award will cover more than two-thirds of the cost of Bellarmine’s tuition for the Commonwealth’s most promising high school students starting Fall 2023. Previously, Bellarmine offered GSP, GSA and GSE participants $1,500 per year, on top of any other scholarships.

“We are significantly increasing our investment to educating the Commonwealth of Kentucky’s socially responsible leaders and change agents of tomorrow who will make an indelible impact in the region and beyond,” said Dr. Michael J. Marshall, Bellarmine’s Vice President of Enrollment, Marketing and Communication.

GSP, GSA and GSE were created to provide enrichment opportunities for rising seniors and encourage them to stay in Kentucky. The three programs serve more than 1,200 students per year.

Bellarmine has been a host site for the Governor’s Scholar Program numerous times, including this summer. A statewide selection committee chooses student participants for the highly competitive program based on nominations submitted by each Kentucky school district. Criteria includes academic records and test scores, teacher and community recommendations, extracurricular and service activities and a writing entry. The program is available at no cost to eligible students.

Bellarmine’s new, increased award is renewable for eight semesters. Recipients may apply for Bellarmine’s many other scholarship opportunities as well, including the Catholic School Scholarship, the Joan and Lee Thomas Multicultural Grant and Trustee scholarships, along with need-based grants. They may also apply for Bellarmine’s full-ride Honors Scholarships.

“Bellarmine offers a robust, transformative education that helps students realize their utmost potential,” Marshall said. “We can’t wait to welcome students taking advantage of this incredible opportunity.”
