Louisville – On May 30 Councilwoman Tammy Hawkins (D-1) held a press conference in Algonquin Park, located at 1614 Cypress Street, to share her concerns with the recent announcement of the closure of the Algonquin Park swimming pool.
Metro Parks & Recreation announced the closure of the pool this summer to allow for the reconstruction of the pool due to vandalism and current conditions of the pool. Parks has shared that work will begin by Labor Day.
Councilwoman Hawkins is demanding action for the constituents of District 1 and Metro Louisville.
“Not having a public pool in the central western area this summer will be detrimental to the health and well-being of my constituents. It’s unacceptable that Metro Parks has let this pool deteriorate to its current condition, and I want to see more dedicated funds allocated for west Louisville in the proposed budget,” said Councilwoman Hawkins.
Public pools play a crucial role in promoting physical activity and overall health in our community. They offer a safe and accessible space for individuals of all ages to engage in recreational activities and exercise.
Three public pools will be open this summer for recreational swimming this summer.
- Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center, an indoor swimming pool, located at 201 Reservoir Avenue. Visit https://louisvilleky.gov/government/parks/mary-t-meagher-aquatic-center for the current hours of operation and pricing.
- Fairdale outdoor swimming pool, located at 709 Fairdale Road.
- Sun Valley outdoor swimming pool, located at 6505 Bethany Lane.
The Mayor’s Administration has announced $100,000 to fund alternative activities for youth this summer. More information will be announced within the next two weeks.
