Louisville – Workout activity challenges are increasingly popular, and who hasn’t been a part of or heard about them? Councilmembers Ben Reno-Weber (D-8), Andrew Owen (D-9), and Pat Mulvihill (D-10) are taking this trend to a new level by collaborating with the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD). They’re introducing a Fitbit incentive challenge specifically for the officers of the 5th Division.

“This challenge provides some fun incentives for officers to be out of their vehicles and walking the streets during their shifts. When officers are walking the streets and interacting with community members, everyone wins” said Councilman Reno-Weber.

The Councilmembers have committed to providing twenty Fitbit devices to the officers of the 5th Division. These officers will then wear the trackers to accumulate as many steps as they can during their shifts. Every week, the officer with the most steps will be awarded a gift certificate or complimentary meal from a 5th Division local eatery.

“I’m excited to be a part of this initiative and eagerly await the surge in steps by officers in the division. I hope residents take notice and show their appreciation to the officers when they see them walking around,” said Councilman Owen.

The 5th Division is mostly comprised of council districts 8 and 9, but also includes sections of districts 10, 16 and 26. The officers participating in this challenge will mainly be walking routes on Bardstown Road, Frankfort Avenue, and parts of Brownsboro Road.

“LMPD’s 5th Division is excited to take part in this opportunity. To my knowledge this is first time LMPD has engaged in this type of activity so it should be an exciting challenge. I feel this is a great time to get out there and engage the community in a unique way. Hopefully, we develop some positive relationships with our neighbors and wear some holes in our boots,” said Major Grissom, 5th Division.
