United States Attorney Michael A. Bennett has appointed Assistant United States Attorney Raymond McGee to lead the Election Day Program for the Western District of Kentucky during today's general election. McGee will serve as the District Election Officer, responsible for handling complaints related to voting rights concerns, threats of violence towards election officials or staff, and election fraud.

Bennett emphasized the importance of a fair electoral process: “Every citizen must be able to vote without interference or discrimination and to have that vote counted in a fair and free election. Similarly, election officials and staff must be able to serve without being subject to unlawful threats of violence.”

The Department of Justice plays a crucial role in addressing issues such as voter intimidation, threats against election workers, and fraud. The department aims to maintain public confidence by providing local contact points for reporting potential violations of federal election laws.

Federal law protects against crimes like threatening violence against election officials, bribing voters, altering vote tallies, and other acts that compromise voting integrity. The Voting Rights Act ensures voters can mark their ballots independently or with assistance if needed due to disability or language barriers.

Bennett stated: “The franchise is the cornerstone of American democracy. We all must ensure that those who are entitled to the franchise can exercise it if they choose, and that those who seek to corrupt it are brought to justice.”

Special agents from the FBI will be available nationwide on Election Day for reports of fraud or abuse. Allegations can be submitted through various channels including an FBI tip line and website.

Complaints about federal voting rights violations can also be directed to the Civil Rights Division in Washington D.C., either online or by phone.

Bennett urged citizens with information on voting issues or fraud to report them: “Ensuring free and fair elections depends in large part on the assistance of the American electorate."

In emergencies involving violence or intimidation at polling places, contacting local authorities via 911 is advised before reaching out to federal agencies.
